Nasya is one of the five purification treatments in Ayurveda’s Panchakarma therapy, specifically focused on cleansing and rejuvenating the nasal passages and sinuses. In Sanskrit, “Nasya” means “related to the nose.” This therapy involves the administration of medicated oils, powders, or herbal juices into the nostrils to clear toxins and balance the doshas, especially Kapha and Vata in the head and neck region.
How Nasya Works:
The nasal cavity is considered the gateway to the brain and consciousness. By applying herbal preparations through the nostrils, Nasya helps:
- Clear mucus and toxins from the sinuses
- Enhance mental clarity and focus
- Relieve headaches, migraines, and sinusitis
- Improve vision and respiratory function
- Reduce stress and promote emotional balance
Types of Nasya:
- Pradhamana Nasya – For dry conditions, using powders
- Brumhana Nasya – Nourishing, using ghee or medicated oils
- Shamana Nasya – For inflammation or infection
- Navana Nasya – A mix of oils and decoctions
- Marsha & Pratimarsha Nasya – Daily care and therapeutic application
Typically performed in the morning or early evening, Nasya is best done under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.
